I find it quite easy to waste time and I’m sure I’m not alone. I also have no problem justifying the time that I waste. I tell myself that computer sudoku, for example, is stretching my mind. Mostly it isn’t. However, making the most of life is about more than merely not wasting time.
Making the most of life is also about enjoying life. In order to enjoy life we need to live in the moment and learn to see the wonder in the world around us.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help us to live actively and for longer. If we keep fit by regular exercise and by taking care of our bodies by feeding them well, we will be able to make the most of life for longer. We can’t choose our DNA, but we can choose to do the best we can with what we have. Allowing ourselves plenty of sleep and rest will also add to the vitality of life.
Change someone else’s life. Not by running it for them or controlling others but by helping someone who needs a leg-up in life. There are a lot of things that we can do for others from volunteering to always keeping an eye out for the person who needs help wherever we are – maybe in the supermarket, or the street.
Be open to new experiences. If we continually stay within our comfort zones we don’t grow. There is something extremely fulfilling about stretching ourselves and attempting something totally outside of our normal activities.
Don’t be afraid to feel. Life is full of wonderful emotions – they help to make us human. Too often we are afraid of our emotions, afraid of ourselves, afraid of what other people will think of us if we are real. We need to face up to the fear and allow ourselves the luxury of feeling.
Don’t judge. We don’t make very good judges anyway because we never know the whole story of someone else’s life. Any judgement that we make is therefore superficial. It is much healthier to look at someone from the perspective of compassion. Much of prejudice is about fear. If we choose not to be afraid of those we don’t understand we will find it easier to try to see life from their perspective.
Take time to reflect. Think about where you would like your life to be. Begin to live the life that you would like. Enrol in a course to help you on your way towards that dream job. Volunteer in the environment in which you would eventually like to work. Study in your free evenings. Do whatever it takes to take a step towards your dream.
Be kind to yourself and others. Taking time to be kind to yourself and give yourself will ultimately allow you to be kind to others. When our lives are full of working an running around after others we become weary. We need some time to ourselves in order to give time to others.
Don’t worry about what others think of you. That is easy to say but less easy to live because we all want to be accepted, but the more that you can live your life with integrity, the easier it will be to make the most of life. Others may have expectations of us – especially family, but we need to find the courage to live our own lives because we’re only here once.
Expand your circle of friends. We like the comfort of old friends. They are easy to be around and make us feel relaxed, but from time to time it’s good to make new friends and it can make life more interesting.
Have fun. Just because it lightens the spirit and makes you feel good, especially if you are interacting with others at the same time.
