There are certain things in life where I show little self-discipline but I can be incredibly self-disciplined if I want something badly enough; at that point I become self-disciplined bordering on obsessive.

Assertiveness shows that you have respect for yourself and others.
In order to build successful relationships in life, we need to learn to be assertive; not aggressively trying to dominate or get our own way, or passively giving in to the whims of others, or to what we think that they expect of us. We need to practice finding that middle ground – assertiveness.
